Challenges Every Small Business Owner Faces

If you own a small business that's beginning to grow and bear fruit, then you're no doubt feeling an extreme level of excitement and anticipation. All of your work, stress, struggle and sacrifice is starting to pay off in more ways than one, and you may even be thinking that all of those people who thought you were crazy will have to eat some crow now that things are starting to roll.

Even though it's an exciting time, and you deserve a pat on the back, you may have already learned that there is never a time to rest on your laurels when you run a small business. In fact, there are pitfalls out there that will catch you off guard unless you're wary of them. A growing business faces many challenges, so we'd like to offer a few examples of potential problems to guard against as your venture continues to move forward.

Manage Your Growth

It's always an exciting feeling to see new business arrive from either new customers or existing ones who ramp up their work with you. More work equals more revenue, which is almost always a good thing. However, we say almost because one of the most common errors small business owners make is allowing their venture to grow too quickly.

That may sound ridiculous, but if you're used to producing 100 items of a certain product every week, and all of a sudden you have to produce 1,000 per week, you need to ask yourself if you're ready to handle that output. Do you have the infrastructure in place? Will the quality of your work be maintained with this big schedule of deliverables? You'd be surprised how many times business owners will look back and realize that the answers to these questions is "no."

Plan Your Finances Accordingly

If you own a business, you've probably already learned how to survive on a shoe-string budget, both in the business and personal realms. Now that you may be able to provide your company and yourself with a bit more cash, you need to understand what comes behind that. First, you need to be fully prepared for any tax liability that could result from a higher income. A big tax bill is not a surprise many people can withstand. Secondly, you need to be disciplined enough to save cash for those times when the business goes into a bit of a down-cycle. That may not happen, but if it does, you need to be financially ready to see it through.

Of course, there are several other challenges small business owners face, and if you'd like to make sure that you're taking care of things properly in the legal sense, contact the business lawyers at Slater Kennon & Jameson, LLP, for a consultation.
